TINIG NG KALAYAAN
(Voices of Freedom)
An evening of music, poetry and art
commemorating the Filipino people's struggle for independence

TORONTO – Ugnayan ng Kabataang Pilipino sa Canada (UKPC) Toronto Chapter and the Care for Ching Committee invite you to "Tinig ng Kalayaan: An evening of music, poetry and art commemorating the Filipino people's struggle for independence". Tinig ng Kalayaan will be held on June 23, 2006, at 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Parkdale Library Auditorium on 1303 Queen Street West.

June 12 is known to Filipinos as Philippine Independence Day, marking the day in 1898 when Filipinos established their first republic after freeing themselves from over 300 years of Spanish colonial rule. This republic was however short-lived as U.S. aggressor forces, aided by the compromising leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo, took over the country. To this day, the Philippines remains a neo-colony – its economy export-led, debt-driven and import-dependent, the majority of the population steeped in poverty, landlessness and unemployment. The U.S. “war on terror” has wreaked havoc on the people, marked by over 800 political assassinations and countless other human rights violations. Still the Filipino people fight back on all fronts – in the armed and parliamentary, open and underground spheres. The struggle for genuine freedom, independence and social justice continues.

Tinig ng Kalayaan will feature performances that celebrate Filipino culture, highlight the people's past victories and bring attention to the current realities and continuing struggle of the Filipinos all over the world. The event will also feature artwork by UKPC-Toronto founding member and aspiring visual and graphic artist, Ching Esguerra, who suffered an incapacitating stroke last November.

Suggested donation is $15, with a sliding scale. Proceeds from the event will be donated towards Ching's rehabilitation expenses and to UKPC-Toronto. Tickets will be available at the door, but advanced purchase is recommended as space is limited. For tickets and more information, contact ukpc_toronto@yahoo.ca or call (416) 841-6335.

*Guests are encouraged to wear native/traditional Filipino attire.
